Brachystelma sp. nov.? Family: Apocynaceae. A rare, possibly undescribed species from Thailand related to Stapeliads. The plant forms thin vining stems with very narrow leaves. It produces lots of tiny (<1cm), hairy dark brown to black flowers with a yellow center. It seems that in some plants the petals reflex all the way back while in others they open like a normal flower. Stems emerge from an underground tuber 1-2" diameter. Plants grow from late spring through fall then die back to the tuber in the winter (corresponding with the rainy and dry seasons in SE Asia).
These plants are new to cultivation but so far I've found them fairly simple to grow and not nearly as touchy as some of the better known African Brachystelma. Plant in a well drained succulent mix. During the growing season water regularly keeping it moist but not wet. When the stems die back to the tuber in the fall water sparingly (maybe a little water once a month at most). Plants grow best in good light. As this is a tropical plant it should do well as a houseplant. If grown outdoors protect from frost.
Please note: Plants are currently just breaking dormancy. Your plant may or may not have growth on it when it arrives. If not they will grow soon.
You will receive a plant shown in the last image or one similar. They are shown growing in a 4" pot. Tubers are approximately 3/4"-1" diameter.
Important Shipping Information
- PLANTS ARE SHIPPED BARE ROOT If you want me to send them in pots send me a message to discuss. Extra charges due to increased shipping costs will apply.
- Immediate Payment (eBay only) Sorry! I can no longer offer a delayed purchase option as the multichannel inventory management system I have started using requires this setting.
- No Delayed Shipping (eBay only) Once you pay I have to (and WILL) ship within 3 business days or eBay will lower my seller rating. I used to have a way to delay shipping but can no longer do this for the same reason as #2 above. Feel free to message me before buying to see if we can figure something out here, no promises though.
- Winter Shipping If you live in a cold climate consider including a 96 hour heat pack in your order during the cold months. I have them as a listing. Just add it to your order. If you don’t see them just message me.
